    Twisting Your Words

What do you do when you say something to your SO is twisted and then they get upset at you? It's similiar to the "black and white" theory that if you say you won't do something or you are not something, that they automatically assume you are the far opposite end of the spectrum.

Wordplay is all fun and games until someone gets hurt (or crazy).  I love bantering around with my SO but as soon as there's even a little hint of discomfort or confusion, we stop and make sure that the other person is okay.  Openness and honesty needs to be tempered with care for the other person in order for there to be healthy communication in a relationship!

I guess that's why we have be clear when we communicate.  "I hate Metallica" point-blank will definitely make someone think you're on the far end, but "I don't like Metallica because it just isn't my cup of tea, but I'd probably be more open to different types of music." gives the better impression that the dislike isn't as strong and 'never ever' as the word hate would portray and the latter hald of the answer suggests that you still have an open mind despite Metallica not being your favourite music band.

It's just like how my man doesn't like Indian food and made some strong comments against it, so I thought that it meant if I so much as had one butter chicken curry in my fridge he'd freak.  But after some probing and discussing, I've come to understand he just doesn't like the general smell of Indian food, but he has had some good (though expensive) curry before that wasn't bad at all, and he'd be open to the idea of trying some with me when we can afford to splurge on food.

It's the worst thing you could do - leads to so much confusion. I try to avoid talking that way in all circumstances ... Just try to avoid it all together, ha. Be honest and open, and it won't weigh on your mind so much.
