Wow an hour away? That's really close actually.  You could feasibly see him every weekend with no problem.  But anyway, I'm in a long distance relationship right now, and it's been that way since we started.  If you want it to happen, you'll make it work.  Right now, if I were you, I would just take it slow, call him up when you're going to be in town, and see where things go.  If he's interested, maybe you could try talking on the phone when you're not together.  I don't think you'll have a problem getting to know him though, even if you are an hour away.
