How do you let someone down easy?
My friend's coworker of a few years just asked her out on a date. The thing is she feels no romantic feelings for him, as they've shared their girl/guy issues with each other over the years and he is COMPLETELY, 100% in the friend zone. But when he asked if he could take her out (and he did use the word date) she freaked and said "Sure!" without thinking because she didn't know how to tell him she wasn't feeling him like that. What should she do?

Just say no ... why beat around te bush? I would just say no, say why I am saying no, and if he cares to understand, he will. Of course, use a gentle voice ... but never give him the thought that it could happen, if she really isn't interested.

I'd say go on the date first, just to see how things pan out. Then afterwards, let him know that she doesn't want to waste his time and doesn't want to lead him on because she doesn't see herself having a romantic sort of relationship with him. As long as she says things in a way that is about how it would be unfair to him and how she doesn't want that, I think that's quite gentle.

Nothing wrong with going out on one date.... who knows, maybe this "absolutely must-be-friend-zoned" friend could be something better in disguise.
If not, it maybe necessary NOT to let him down TOO easily. In my experience, most guys don't know what the heck that means. You can't tell them that you want to hang out and that you love them, but not in that way... blahblahblah.
I DO NOT WANT TO DATE YOU. I DON'T "MAYBE" WANT TO DATE YOU. NO NO NO.

Sometimes, you just can't let someone down easy since the person just might not get the message that way. What's important is that you make it clear to them that you're not interested.
The person will be hurt even more if you aren't clear by giving the person hope. That's just not right since you're stringing the person along.
